Did you know Florida is the only State in the entire Nation paying a State Sales Tax on Commercial Leases? This affects every tenant, business and property owner who leases space. As you can imagine, this issue impacts us all!
The #1 issue advocated again this session at our NAIOP State Board Directors meeting was the Elimination of State Sales Tax on Commercial Leases. The meeting was held on January 20 in Tallahassee with the following “Day at the Capitol” to engage our Florida State Legislatures and discuss the impactful issues affecting the commercial real estate industry.
Our State delegate team from the NEFL chapter included Nelson Bradshaw, Erik Sharp, Christian Harden and Julie Bohn. Our team met with Representatives Lake Ray, Jay Fant, Travis Cummings and Senator Audrey Gibson. Discussions with the Legislators included job creation and benefit to small businesses if the hardship of the commercial lease sales tax was repealed.
There are currently four different bills proposed to repeal this issue. We are hopeful one will be passed this session but will need your support to make it happen.
